The city incorporated in 1950, following rapid growth as a result of the Ohio River flood of 1937 -- the city is on higher ground than the affected areas in and near downtown and further west -- with the community as it stands today beginning life at the intersection of Breckenridge Road, Shelbyville Road, and Westport Road in the early to mid-19th century.

Commute times are one of the best in Louisville, averaging 19.7 minutes according to ZipAtlas. The city is also well-served as far as transit service is concerned, with frequent service divided among five routes provided by TARC. As an incorporated city, St. Matthews is the 20th largest city in the commonwealth of Kentucky, and is generally bounded by I-64 to the south, I-264 (also known as the Henry Watterson Expressway) to the east, Cannons Lane to the west, and a number of subdivisions -- including Bellewood, Brownsboro Village, Maryhill Estates, and Windy Hills -- to the north. Enclaves within the city include: Richlawn, Beechwood Village, and Norbourne Estates. Shelbyville Road is the main drag, passing through the city’s heart from west to east.

St. Matthews is home to a handful of parks, including Community Park, Arthur K. Draut Park, Brown Park, and Warwick Park. One of Louisville Metro’s largest parks, Seneca Park, lays nearby St. Matthews to the southwest as well, with its nearby northeastern extension bounded by Pee Wee Reese Road, Rock Creek Drive, and Cannons Lane. 

St. Matthews boast three major festivals per year. The St. Matthews Street Festival in May celebrates the city’s community, businesses, and food, while the annual Halloween in Brown Park offers a safe, family-friendly environment for trick-or-treating. Finally, Light Up St. Matthews ushers in the holiday season with numerous light displays throughout Brown Park for all to enjoy into the new year.

St Matthews Shopping & Entertainment

The city is also a shopper’s paradise, as it is home to Mall of St. Matthews and Oxmoor Center, the fifth and second largest malls in Kentucky, respectively. The two malls are within one mile of each other, with the Henry Watterson placing the former to the west, and the latter to the east. Both malls feature an extensive mix of low- and high-end retailers. Shelbyville Road Plaza, which lays to the west of Mall of St. Matthews on Shelbyville Road and Bowling Boulevard, is home to anchor stores Nordstrom Rack and Trader Joe’s, with smaller boutiques and other stores filling out the roster. The shopping center was also the host of e-tailer Gilt’s Gilt Designer Outlet pop-up store, with appearances in 2013 and 2015
