Audubon Park Real Estate Market

Audubon Park is a home-rule city within the city limits of Louisville, located three miles to the south of downtown and the Ohio River. The small community -- listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1996 -- is considered "an urban jewel in the midst of metropolitan Louisville" by its own government, notable for its historic preservation, wondrous trees, and warm community spirit. It is also a bird sanctuary Audubon Park is perfect for those seeking an oasis from hustle and bustle of the city without having to leave it all behind. Home prices range between the low $100s to the mid-$500s, with Craftsman, Tudor Revival, Dutch Colonial, Neo-Federal and Neo-Colonial architectural styles among the many possibilities for your new forever home.

Living in Audubon Park

Around 1,500 call Audubon Park's 230 acres home. The city began as hilly pastures owned by General William Preston, who had been granted the land in 1774 by the British government for his service during the French and Indian War. Audubon Park was named after wildlife painter John James Audubon by the Audubon Park Realty Company, who purchased the land from then-owner G. Robert Hunt in 1912. Once Louisville Gas & Electric began installing utilities in the area during the 1920s, development took off, with a given home's construction begun every two weeks. Audubon Park is generally bounded by Hess Lane to the north, Preston Highway to the west, Audubon Country Club to the south, and Eagle Pass to the east. Both Preston Highway and nearby Poplar Level Road link up with I-264 to the south, connecting the neighborhood to the rest of Louisville and beyond. Mean travel time to work is 19.3 minutes, and two bus routes to the east and west are minutes away.

Parks and Attractions in Audubon Park

Audubon Park Country Club lays south of the namesake city on the other side of Cardinal Lane. Established in 1908, the "golf-driven" club features an 18-hole course designed by architect Thomas Bendelow, the "Johnny Appleseed of American Golf." The course's park-like setting is perfect those looking to unwind from the day-to-day, even if only for a couple of hours. The club also has five outdoor tennis courts -- two clay, three hard -- a junior Olympic-size swimming pool and accompanying baby pool, fine dining, a full calendar of social events, and a private exercise facility with personal trainer. A couple of minutes to the east is the Louisville Zoo. The 134-acre "State Zoo of Kentucky" hosts over 1,700 animal in natural and mixed exhibits representing several habitats from around the world. The zoo throws one of the largest Halloween parties in the United States every October. Over 900,000 visit the Louisville Zoo annually. Four large festivals dominate the scene in Audubon Park throughout the year. The Festival of the Dogwood during the third weekend of April celebrates the flowering of the namesake trees, most planted during World War II in honor of family members serving their country. The Audubon Park Garden Tour on the last Saturday in June helps fund the Festival of the Dogwood and Community Christmas Celebration, along with other botanical-related programs. The Independence Day Parade winds through the city with a fire-truck led celebration of patriotism, and the Community Christmas Celebration on the second Sunday of December kicks off the holiday season with warmth, community spirit, and fellowship.
